Orange On Blue an Installation of paintings and performance Feb. 2015
a sold out show!
In February 2015, Orange leased the collapsing Astor Hotel in downtown Astoria Oregon. Once the crown of the city for elegance and entertaining now a derelict unused hall. The Art Deco columns and tile mosaic floor combined with 30’ ceilings provided the perfect setting for a themed show of large scale abstractions. The ruinous hall stands quick to be lost to the environment as nature takes back and grows through human footstep. An often used metaphor and issue in Orange’s work.
A focused 4 months in the studio yielded a sizable body of work, over 40 pieces of which most sold in the month long exhibition. The works while a return to his previous study of automatic intuitive abstract expressionism carry a very recognizable form (if you know what to look for) and representational suggestion of the Columbia River, Pacific Ocean, and the waterfront near Astoria. Oiled drag marks on canvas and panel made by scrapers, spatulas, and knives lend themselves to be indications of architecture, horizon, ship, rigging, and water. The nearly monochromatic intense blue paintings continue to show his interest in working high contrast value studies reflecting in emotional pools of expression.
